This week in Comp studies we learned about different lyrical devices that can be used to communicate a message or emotion.
Allegory is one of the literary devices discussed. I have used this device in some of my songs. It is probably one of the most common literary devices used in songwriting.
I have written a song called ‘Push’. It is inspired by a story in the Bible about a woman who is sick. She hears about Jesus coming to town and wants to go see him……but she is an outcast the towns people don’t want her anywhere near them or Jesus. So in order to get to see Jesus she needs to get past some obstacles. The lyrics I wrote are as follows:Come to me just as you are,
In your shame and sorrow, come to me
Persevere push through the crowd,
The time is now,
Your healing is here in me. Those lyrics are a sort of allegory. In order for someone to get to Jesus they may have to overcome some obstacles……mental/physical/emotional/logical……so on……They have to ‘Push’. Another device we spoke about was irony. When we discussed irony, my mind immediately thought of Alanis Morissette’s song ‘Ironic’. It’s not ironic at all. But I have found a rerecorded version of this song which is actually ironic. Enjoy : ) Another ironic song is John Denver’s ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’…..it is ironic because John Denver died in a plane crash….these are some of the lyrics from the song:” cause Im leavin on a jet plane, Dont know when Ill be back again, Oh babe, I hate to go. Now that’s ironic!
